Manual to Power Brakes - How To?
« on: July 06, 2011 - 12:51:45 PM »
Hi All-
I replacing the brake lines on my 71 Barracuda.  The brakes are standard manual drum brakes.
Since I’ll have the brake system all apart, I was thinking about upgrading to power brakes.
I did a search in Forums for manual to power brake conversion, but didn’t see any conclusive answers.

What does it take to go from manual brakes to power brakes?
Is it as simple as replacing the master cylinder to a master cylinder with a booster?

Classic Industries has this master cylinder with a booster (Part number MM3066):

Thanks in advance,
Ron

Mancini has a direct bolt on booster so no need for the special linkage a plate , it just bolts right on .
I assume you want to upgrade to disc at the same time ??

Thanks guys for the quick response.

Chryco-
The Mancini powerbrake booster, is it this one?

Classic Industries has the brake lines and assorted hardware.

Going to front disk brakes?
Well, I did some resaerch yesterday, I found a Summit kit for $900.  It comes with the powerbrake booster.
I really wasnt planning on going to disk at this time.  Comparing power brakes vs disk, about an extra $600.  Plus, still need to replace the brake lines/HW = $300.

Power Brakes = $600
Frnt Disk = $1200

I'm going to have to pass on the disk upgrade right now.

You need to hit the used market for the disc conversion....heck of a lot cheaper than that :)

and that is a good conversion from Mancini...appears to bolt right up to the manual brake plate

Just go disc w/manual booster.  I like the stiff pedal feel from mine.

All-
Thanks again for your informative responses.  A salvage yard trip to find disk brake components is an option I forgot about.  The field trip will have to wait until after Labor Day; these 100+ degree days and I don’t get along anymore.  Reason number 58 why I don’t like getting older; weather is now a consideration  :sly:.

Scarebird offers a disc brake adapter that allows the use of your drum brake spindles & they have a list of cheap parts that are easy to get to do the disc conversion at minimal cost
