I look for one with a hot secretary! 

It all depends on what you need done.  Is it a small shop who does specialty orders or do the only commercial jobs?  shop that do only commercial stuff charge more for off colors and small jobs.  Ask around at car show to see who the locals use.  A good shop turns around the job quickly.

How long they've been in business equals consistency and referrals.

I once had a friend years ago that owned a Powder coat shop. He'd let me prep and powder coat my own parts. Wasn't really that difficult to do.

It was so easy even a Caveman could do it.

Make sure that they blast and etch before applying color. I agree with Topcat

Powder coating has many hues just like paint. If you plan on any hue changes that sway from original; make sure to do a pre test on a dummy part before applying to target part.

There are different grades with powder coating also. Industrial finish is the most durable like the dull grey for example. Most are durable as they are for automotive use.

Fact find with the shop what you want.

just don't deal with the company I did , they have been in business for 10 years or more .... I was Quoted 4125 to do my diff , when I picked it up it was $250 maybe they had never done a diff housing before .... Yeah right , how could they be off by 100%
