There's two used 440 on craigslist. If I went to look at them what should I look for. One is 300 the other 1200

I'd say it depends on what your plans are? If you plan on rebuilding it anyway ( core) then go for the cheapest option. If it's a running engine your after and don't have a big budjet.... check compression, look at head casting #'s check the oil ( clean/dirty)

If not running, you need to pull the heads and check bore, also check lifter valley for cracks from a hard freeze.  CDEFG blocks are for the most part, steel forged crank engines.  Before pulling heads, see if the engine spins over by hand first. Take an 1 1/4 wrench with you or socket extention and ratchet.   To rebuild a 440 back to fresh is around 12-1500 bucks. As you step up into performance and around 3k for start

If you plan on building a motor (pistons, alluminum heads, forged crank, stroker kit etc.) and all your worried about is the block then go cheap (price not material). If you are just looking for a running motor then there is more to it like Brads70 said.

When you say rebuild what are you including?

 to do block prep
re ring, bearings, turn crank,  valve job, cam n lifters, timing chain, oil pump, clean all covers and gasket set.  This is a basic keep it simple rebuild like this. Useing the block dates above helps with the compression, then finding 66-67 date heads will give you an increase in compression, but and about 325 more to the cost of installing bigger valves, hardened exhaust seats and a better valve spring set up.
