What can you tell me about this TQ?
« on: July 14, 2011 - 03:51:38 PM »
I got this with a box of parts when I bought my 440, don't think it was the carb off the 440 but possible. It's a thermoquad with a stamping # 2146. Is it a decent carb, is it worth anything? Thanks all, Matt

When setup correctly they can be a very nice carb.  If not setup correctly they are a real pain.  The units with the larger secondaries are worth a little more then the units with the smaller secondaries.  I don't know what one you have there without seeing a pic of the butterflies.  It doesn't look like it has any smog equipement on it so that is a plus.

I have a large secondary TQ that was off of a 76 or 77 Newport that had a 400.  It has some smog stuff on it since the car was equiped with Lean Burn.  I was told by a guy who restores TQ's that it is probably worth around $25.  If your carb is the smaller secondary version, I'd say it is worth around $25 too.  Maybe slightly more since it doesn't have extra smog stuff.

71 TQ's were a one year only carb.  Those are going to bring the most money.  Yours isn't a 71 carb.  The only other very desirable TQ's are the rare 1000cfm race units.

Thanks Burdar, here's a pic of the butterflies. Is this a 800cfm?

I'll check the carb I have on the bench tonight.  It looks like yours is the large secondary unit.  There isn't much material between the primary and secondary butterflies.

Your not looking at the right numbers but I would say it may be a '71 model, as it does not have a bowl vent.  Check the base plate drivers side there is a pad with #s stamped. My list shows 4972 71 340 MT (3512820) or 4973 71 340 AT (3512821)
and should be 800cfm, read about it http://thermoquads.com/
Not hard to rebuild but there are a few tricks to setting up and a bunch of measurements that most folks don't get right or even bother with & then blame the T/Q when things don't go well.

Value would be the most to a restorer, I'd guess a hundred plus.

Thanks Bullitt that was a big help. The #'s are 9103S. It's a 4th gen carb. The truck 4th gens were based on the 74 model and are supposed to be better how can I tell if it's one?,  the website does not say. How do I tell if this is a smog carb? Thanks all,  Matt

my list show 9103S to be for a '77 400 HP AT F (4027761), looks like a good model, smog devices were not as heavily used on trucks till later, still the 800cfm.
the value may not be near what a '71 would be, probably more like $50. as is.

Wade may be right about setting them up, but I'm definitely not a carb guru, and after I rebuilt mine years ago it ran like a top. I'm still tempted to go back.

Maybe a little confusion here, or I missed something...the 9103S is for1977 440, and is a 850 CFM unit.  It is worth using if your going with a TQ carb.
My info is from "A carter thermo-quad guide", page 17.

Great thanks guys, well I guess it's worth keeping around then. Little too much carb for the 360 though that's too bad. Thanks again for all the help,  Matt

Matt
Don't think of it as too much carb...it IS the best CFM for your 360.    WHY??   because the primary throttle bores are a little larger.  This means you can cruise the highways a little faster on the primary bores before having to open the large secondary bores.
I used to have a 340 duster with the smaller 800 cfm TQ carb.  With 3.23 axle gears the maximum cruise speed was about 70-75 mph before starting to open the large secondaries. With your larger 850 cfm, the cruise speed for your 360 will be a little more than if you only had an 800 cfm carb.
I am running a 850 cfm TQ carb on my 360.  It works great using Demonsizzler carb jetting (basically stock jetting).  I plan on using an O2 sensor to fine tune the jetting, but for now it is working great.

Looks like a rebuild kit is in my future. Do you have a good source (website/book besides the carter theroquad guide saw that one) for rebuilding and tuneing these? Great info thanks, Matt
