Roller Lifters

I've got a line on a set of roller lifters for a pretty good price. Two questions:

1) How can you check to see if they're in usable condition? I'm guessing that you check the rollers to see if the action is smooth, but is there anything else to look for?

2) What are good brands and brands to stay away from?

Soak them in varsol, clean them and blow them out/off and then toss 'em in a container full of motor oil and soak 'em for a day. Pull them out and wipe them off and the old school way of checking them, after a close (use a magnifying glass) look, was to run the rollers up and down the inside of your arm, feeling for ANY clicks, hitches, etc. There should be no pitting on the wheels and they should show no wobbling on the axle/trunions, no excessive scratching on the bodies and the links and their pins should be free and fit well. Good makers would be Crower, Comp or Isky, but there's others as well. Bad one? Beware off-shore and if they seem to be too good a deal to be true, they probably ARE. You could also send them back to the maker and they'll usually go over them and give you an opinion. Good luck :2cents:

I talked to the guy who's selling them. He says that he doesn't know the brand and that they came in a motor he bought, but that one of them seems to have some green paint on it that he thinks came on the lifter from the manufacturer. Does green paint ring a bell with anyone?

On Buicks, we saw a few problems with "sticky" new roller lifters in the conventional preload style, but, the almost "zero preload" units seemed to work very well.  I think those are the pro-magnums, but, I did not go look to see if I remember correctly.  For sure, they will pull more rpm without pumping up suddenly on a cylinder or two.

If they are used, I don't know if I'd use any used roller lifters in my engine..Course, it would seem the new ones aren't any better so whaddya do?
