    What is the best blasting media for body work. Something to remove rust and paint without damage.

    •Black Beauty
    •Aluminum Oxide
    •Glass Bead
    •Walnut Shell
    •Corn Cobb
    •Baking Soda
     
    •Crushed Glass (cullet)
    •Garnet
    •Steel Shot
    •Steel Grit

    any other ideas

    My car was sand blasted in the door jambs, engine compartement and inside the trunk.  The underside was also sand blasted lightly.  All remaining panels were stripped by hand.  After the metal work was done, the underside was glass beaded to get ready for paint.

    Do not use sand on body panels.  They will warp.  Glass bead is a better choice but can still warp the panels if done by someone who isn't experienced.  Soda blasting is easy on the panels but the cleanup is more extensive.  You have to make sure to neutralize the soda or you can have paint problems down the road.

    See if anyone in your area does CO2 blasting. No heat, no media to clean up...

    Going to pick up later today a pair of fenders, a decklid, and some braces that were blasted with walnut shells.  The fenders had filler, OEM paint, and a lacquer repaint.  Decklid had OEM + lacquer repaint.  Braces had rust.  I'll report back with results.

    Blasting a car is like panting a car.  Give a good painter crappy paint and they can still do a good job.   Give a bad painter good paint and you will get a poorly painted car.

    As long as you know how not to warp panels and why panels warp, you can blast with almost anything.  Sand, Walnut, Plastic.... it all works.

    •Black Beauty   black coal dust. Breaks down Need a special breathing apparatus built onto full face mask.
     
    •Aluminum Oxide aggresive and re usable. what I prefer. PSI/CFM need to be turned down on flat metal surfaces.
    •Glass Bead  Silica dust. Need a special breathing apparatus built onto full face mask.
    •Walnut Shell  Takes too long for outside.

    •Baking Soda Needs a vinegar or metal phosphate wash afterwards
     
    •Crushed Glass (cullet)  Silica dust. Need a special breathing apparatus built onto full face mask.
    •Red Garnet  Expensive but has a high reclamation ratio. aggresive and re usable.
    •Steel Shot
    •Steel Grit

    I am thinking plastic is the way to go and is what a guy recommended by the board uses.
