Small trailer hitch for rear bumper on 70-72 Challenger?
« on: March 09, 2012 - 07:38:59 PM »
Anyone have pics of a small trailer hitch on a rear bumper 70-72 Challenger?  I'm considering one so to tow a small race-tire trailer (harbor-freight type about 40"x50"? maybe a little bigger)... only class-1 type.  I DO have a full-size trailer for my car, but I sold the tow vehicle and am considering low-cost alternatives (maybe even selling the trailer to a close friend that would allow me occasional usage of it).

This is one that the original owner installed , I assume in the 70's.  I don't know anything about it except that he used to pull a trailer with snowmobiles on it.  It attaches to the rear bumper above the license plate and to the rear valence.

If you do a search there is at least one other thread on this topic.

Make a hidden hitch  :ylsuper:

+ Hidden when not in use = FAR better looking !!!
+ Strong

- Will move bumper backwards ca 10 mm
- Will need to cut the lowerplate at the aft of the car (The square hole for hitch goes perfectly inbetween the original bracket on this plate)
-Take some time to fabricate.
-Requires a bracket in your trunk, to hold the hitch when not in use...

NBNBNBNB!!!
Do NOT simply take power for brake lights directly from you car's cables.
The blinker switch will struggle to handle the current needed for the trailer's extra light bulbs..
Alternatives;
A) Connect directly to car's cables, via 1 AMP fuse and provide power to a trailer having LED lights only.
B) Use relay's which are triggered only by the power from the car's original cabes....
The power supply to the relays must then come from a additional cabel comming from the battery.
This is the solution I choosed, as this will enable me to tow any trailer...

Good idea Johannes. You could add a flip down licience plate holder too ! That would really hide it well!

:thinkerg:  I glued on a bracket containing 3 magnets to the licence plate...and it sits WERY well.

Then all you need is to pack the camping gear, and bring your family to a shaded place by the beach....

By doing it the way I did, I can relatively easily access most of the cargo space, and pull out any of the bags packed inside...
A nice thing I found out, is that my things will NOT get wet, the water gets thown out into the weal wells, but not into the plywood box...

At the risk of de-railing the original topic, I trow in another picture showing the front..

I've seen pictures of Purple1's 1/2 a challenger....SUPERNICE.
Also I've seen pics of a -71 Cuda with 1/2 a car behind it.... Anyone seen the hitch design on that Plymouth? Is it hidden?
....reason for asking is I'm considering installing a hitch on my Cuda clone......maybe towing a jet ski?
