Creaky steering wheel
« on: July 29, 2011 - 11:05:13 AM »
Hi Guys,

Did a couple searches, no hits.

My steering wheel starts to develop a creak as it warms up with the car. Its coming from the crush can. Sounds like plastic on plastic kind of a binding sound.
Think I'm going to have to pull it apart. Got another stupid question how does the horn button come off of a standard wheel?

Thanks,
Brian

Just below the crush can is the column bearing. Maybe it is getting stiff?

Thanks,

Got the can off. Can see the bearing seal is torn. Assuming its bad bearing. Now I think the ignition cylinder is next but not sure how to get that out either.

I've dealt with steering that creaked when it got warm but it was on my '72 Mustang so maybe not the same deal but worth a mention perhaps.

Anyhow it was fine when cold but as it warmed up I could hear it like you describe and I could also feel it through the wheel.  I changed the fluid for proper steering fluid and it cured it.  It looked like someone had put transmission fluid in there.
