A co-worker traveleled to Canada for the long weekend to visit a friend, and came back with stories about her trip. Well, as I often do I then google earthed the area, and then slid over to the Detroit area because I'm kind of a geography buff, and curious about where things are, and what they look like, and lo and behold, I find out Hamtramck is practically the main automotive plant next to downtown Detroit. Then clicking on all the neighborhood pictures, and wow is all I can say. It looks like the area is blighted, with mile after mile of abandoned buildings like where they film apocalyptic movies. Remember the movie Robocop? It must have been filmed there. I think even a packard facility lies in ruins nearby. It is such a shame that our once world dominant industry has been laid to waste. Even looking at the Hamtramck plant it looks like a shadow of its former self.
Who knows when the current aerial was taken, but only a small percentage of the parking lot is full. At least you can see an area where they probably do some autocrossing in the south lot.
And I measured the main building at about 1/2 mile from one side to the other!
I pray our industry gets some new life, but its going to have to reinvent itself without government subsidies if its ever going to thrive again.
