Cam break in
« on: August 13, 2011 - 03:49:25 PM »
I have been looking through the search function but I use my phone to view this site mostly at it doesn't work that well.
As least not on my phone.

What is a good cam break in procedure to break in a new cam?

I am using a lunati 60303 cam, stock steal rocker arms, 2018 Rhoads lifters in a 440 with a 512 stroker kit.

Thanks

When assembling make sure you use break in lube on the lobes and base of the lifters, also use new lifters then as Chryco says.

Any special procedure when installing a cam that isn't brand new?  One that was broken in and driven a couple hundred miles in one engine and is now being installed in another?

being that it is in a different engine which means the lifter bore spacing/angles could be slightly different, I think I would put a new set of lifters in it and treat it like a new break in....otherwise, if everything is exactly the same, it would be okay to put the original lifters back on to their respective bores and crank it up...makes me a bit nervous to go to another block, tho

I have always gone with the ol school thought process,
as long as the lifters match the same lobe, you're o.k
If there is a newer thought process I sure would like to know about it.
If I cant fix it, it's broke

I marked each lifter so they could be put back in the right place.  I thought about the bores being a little different...that's why I thought another breakin maybe needed.

Better safe than sorry, eh? I believe Comp sells a break in oil, too. There was an article about them in one of the car mags, either Car Craft, Popular Hot Rodding or Hot Rod just recently and an internet search of their sites would likely turn it up. Good luck!

Set the timing with the plugs out, so it fires right up and you can rev it to 2500 right away. Use a small high torque starter. If you have multiple vavle springs, take out the middle ones till the cam is broken it.

You only get one chance to break in your cam. I never do any extra cranking during the 1st startup.

Burdar, get new lifters.  If you held the bottom of a used lifter up against the side of another lifter, you'll see that the bottom is worn out.
