Starting Troubles
« on: August 18, 2011 - 02:17:47 AM »
Put 440 back in car after cam swap, (cam has been degreed), Turned engine over by hand to bolt up flex plate.  So brought back up to TDC on # 1 cylinder, placed gear then dizzy back in with rotor pointing @ # 1.  Had coil disconnected and was laying on firewall, hooked battery up and coil went to ground 2 times until I remembered key was on.  Tried to start, but would not.  Double checked timing issues, nothing.  Did not have a new ballast or ECU, but think problem may be there?  Any thoughts or suggestions?  Thanks.
Jason

It's turning over but not firing?  It's firing and turning over but won't start?

You did turn the engine over twice so that it was back on TDC (or whatever it took to be on the compression stroke)?

:iagree: the piston is at TDC twice once to fire & once at the top of exhaust stroke , you may be firing #6 instead  . I assume you have spark when cranking it

It is firing, turning over, but will not start.
Yes, turned it over until we had TDC on # 1.

if it is on tdc, have you moved the distributor a bit in both directions to see if it would start?  As opposed to leaving it aimed at number one?

Yes, then I rotated the plug wires one way then the other to see if it made a diff.  Double checked firing order, started over on the basics.

Do you ever do something so dumb, you do not want anyone to know?  When I put the plug wires on, (new cap, rotor, and plug wires) I did not have the cap marked.  I had someone reading me the numbers that the wires go to, but I was going counter clockwise and they were going clockwise.  :bricks1: Switched them up and it fired right up.

Been there done that !!
I was in a hurry , a customer was picking up his car in a few minutes & the wires kinda had a natural position on the cap so I plugged them in fast ,yup backwards  :smilielol:

The first time I ever replaced a distributor cap, 16 and knew very little about cars, I just pulled wires off and then put them back on the new cap. Order? Why would that matter?  :roflsmiley:

:grinyes:  LOL...someone called me once to help them start a '55 Ford they were restoring.  I spent an hour before I started tracing wires.  Same problem, wired in the wrong order.  They were Chevy guys.
