71 'Cuda Taillight Panel
« on: September 14, 2011 - 11:20:29 AM »
I am trying to install my 71 'Cuda taillight panel and am missing the angle section between the trunk floor and the taillight panel and it seems like there is a piece missing from the corner piece to the center piece.  I was wondering if that was a piece that can be purchased if so where.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Did you replace the trunk floor ?Did you use a 2 piece??

The angle piece that turns up in the back is part of the trunk floor I believe. The new one piece AMD & Good mark trunk floors have this section attached to it. The 2 piece cheap ones are patch panels and do not have this piece.

Take a look at the first few pictures in the below link.

The back edge of the floor has an upright right-angle lip about 5/8" tall going all the way across.  It's not uncommon for first-timers to cut it off when removing the old trunk floor (I did).  If it's not there, you need to weld a little angle strip all the way across so that the lip is about 2" out from the cross member below.
Also, do you have the corner pieces?  They're shown here:

PM me if you need specific info or measurements.

Yeah I had put a two piece in but have replaced it with a one piece from AMD along with the rest of the floor. My problem is I left some of the original taillight panel attached to the tailight panel bracket on the right side because it had been welded together to the trunk extensions.  I have since removed it and the brackets and ordered new brackets from Columbia Parts Company.  It's been years since I have been able to get back to this project and I forgot what was done before. Thanks for your help.  Another question I had is this.  I have a used taillight panel that just needs some work on the bottom.  I was using metal from the trunk that I had just removed but it seems to not be as solid as the rest of the tailight panel.  I almost ordered a reproduction but have heard they don't line up that well and since mine is not rotted I opted to not buy the reproduction.  Was that a wise move? If so what gauge sheet metal should I use for the lip on the used tailight panel.  I thought the trunk floor would match up but by the time I cut a strip out of it it just doesn't seem as sturdy. Could that be because of it being just a strip?  Thanks again for all your help and I apologize for the slow reply
