471 case true trac query
« on: February 24, 2012 - 12:09:25 AM »
I just landed a 70 cuda in Australia and have had some trouble with the bearing end play in the 8.75 rear end. It is a 471 case. I pulled the chunk out and found there was no thrust spacers fitted. I bought a kit from Mancini's via link below. I then found the suregrip clutch plates were worn and found alot of metal in the bottom of the housing.

Long story short I am now fitting a True trac set up and was wondering how the axle adjustment works when fitting the true trac. Do the parts from Mancini still fit the true trac to get the bearing adjustment right?

Any help appreciated.

I think you meant "741" case?

If so, the thrust buttons in the Sure grip unit allow the Axle bearing end play to be adjusted through one adjuster by pushing the other axle outward.
If the thrust buttons weren't theree, no biggie as most times when the rear is swapped, they fall into the housing. Your 1970 Cuda should have had a "489" carrier.

Thanks ChallengerHK, just working my way around the site and found the newbies so will introduce myself.

Cooter - Thanks I believe the carrier was swapped out at some stage. It is a 741 case my mistake. If the existing suregrip is swapped out to a true trac will the buttons still fit into the true trac for bearing adjustment?

I am greenhorn to this rear end and there is not much experience in Australia with these rear ends.

I done some more digging on this and it appears when replacing suregrip to true trac you also need to change to green bearings as you cannot do bearing adjustment with true trac. Appreciate if anyone has been through this exercise to confirm if this is so because I dont want to fit green bearings unless there is no other option.

I have a 489 and 8.75 rear end that I converted to a 3.55 ring gear True Trac and new axles with green bearings from Dr Diff.  I told him my car is mostly a cruiser but I do some spirited mountain road driving and might do a road racing track day once a year if that, however no drag racing.  I set up the ring and pinion myself with his advice and haven't had any problems with it.  I talked to Dr Diff about how I would use the car and followed his advice.  I love the way it has all worked out in my car but my only other experience was with the 2.76 stock ring gear and open diff.  My car has a 318 and 904 auto FYI.

Good luck!

is there a center pin that could be drilled out to add buttons or use the floater pin like the cone sure grip used ?

My truetrac came with a spacer which apparently you put into the centre when using cone type bearings.
