6 pack flywheel question
« on: January 07, 2005 - 01:08:31 AM »
Is there a special flywheel for externally balanced 440s with 6 pack rods?  I can not find any special flywheel that MOPAR performance sells.  I have a flywheel from a internally balanced 383.  Can I use that one?

Taking the motor for a balance soon and want to make sure the machine shop can work with the flywheel I give them or if I need to get a new one?  :dontknow:

Hello CV,

basically most of the new flywheels are 0-balanced i.e. they're good for internally balanced engine. And no, you can't use 0-balanced flywheel from your 383 to stick with externally balanced engine.
If I would be you, since you're anyway going to balance the set, ask the machine shop to make it as internally balanced engine. just carry all the pistons with rings and locks, rods and bearings to the shop and ask them to make it as internally balanced engine. then you can use your 0-balanced flywheel from 383 (make them to check the flywheel for it's preciseness for 0.. also the damper)
Furthermore, a healthy suggestion is to change from cast iron flywheel to steel flywheel.. just to be on a safe side

The 6 pack flywheel is unique & requires a spcific offset balance
seeing as the engine is apart & you are having it balanced anyway this is not a problem , the correct weight can be removed from the flywheel to match your assembly or the crank cam be internally balanced as 500 mentioned which I also recommend  , a steel flywheel is a good idea also but may not be nessisary

Thanks guys!!!!

I will tell the machine shop to internally balance the assembly.

Do I even need to bring in the dampener and flywheel?
