shifting mechanism
« on: August 28, 2011 - 06:24:26 PM »
I am thinking about rebuilding my hurst pistol grip shifting mechanism or buying a brand new unit from hurst. I saw a rebuild kit on Brewer's site. Does any one have any experience with rebuilding their mechanism? Would I be better off buying a whole new unit? Thanks!!!!! :working: :wavingflag: :1zhelp:

I rebuild them all the time , easy to do & I would try this first before buying new , just clean out all the old grease & dirt & pack it with new wheel brg grease , make sure you keep all the parts in order . Generally this is successful but depending on the wear a new unit may be a better choice .

I would redo what you have now. Even if you have to shim it a little it will still shift better than new. It is just broken in and I would use a moly grease. It works better in cold weather depends on where you live. You might want to check the trans fluid change to thinner and check the shift arms where the linkage slides in. To see how bad it is worn. I had to drill some back to round then use steel tubbing as a bushing to tighten it all back up again.

Moly or white lithium grease can be used in the shifter but I do not recommend using lighter lube than the 75-90 the service manual recommends as most of these cars do not move in cold weather anymore
