exhaust and shifter opinions
« on: September 01, 2011 - 02:34:21 PM »
ok getting at the part that I need to put the exhaust into the car, now the car is a 440 out of a winnebago so I am figuring right now it is a 275hp motor give or take, well I was impressed with the flowmaster super 40's and I contacted a tech there and with that kind of HP that I should NOT got with a 3in exhaust, and that it will fall flat on its face, and go with the delta 50,  well the car right as of now is not a power house that I do know but I will eventually will be building it up mostly trying to get it on the road. so what are your guy's opinions on this should I go with 2 1/4 inch exhaust with the flow master delta 50's. or go with the flow master super 40's. was the guy just BSing me?

other question is automatic aftermarket shifters, who has what and how well do you like them, looking for just a temp till I can get the manual transmisssion I want

thanks again guys

I am not a fan of the Flowmasters , they have an obnoxious sound , I would run 2.5 " pipe with a Dynomax Super Turbo

I also have ( seller told me?) a motorhome 440. I installed the all stainless system from magnaflow 2 1/2 " I'm happy with it! It'ssomewhat  quiet with a nice rumble when you get on it. Hope that helps?

The guy wasn't BS-ing you. I wouldn't go to anything bigger than a 2.5" exhaust unless you are putting out some major horsepower. I'm not a fan of Flowmaster simply because of the tinny sound they have. That's my opinion, and many love the sound...It's a matter of taste.

The guy was bs'ing you about it falling on its face with a 3", but, it will sound more like a truck and you can include me in the flowmaster dislike club.  Always remind me of kids in SloStangs that inevitably have a pair of Flowmasters and nothing else.

The 2.5" should be able to handle close to 500 hp without significant restriction...and the flowmasters will be a larger source of restriction than the pipe.  I prefer the straight thru style muffers whether the UltraFlo, Magnaflow, Pypes.  The SuperTurbo's mentioned by Neil also work very well and are low restriction.

The 40 series is going to be VERY loud.   Don't even think about just dumping the exhaust infront of the rear end.  It will be even louder.  The 50 series should sound good and not be too quiet.  3" is really overkill.  Unless you are going with mandrel bent pipes, 2 1/2" is also not a good idea.  2 1/4" pipe is about the max that you can cleanly bend with a traditional bender without the pipe wrinkling shut.  If you are going with prebent system that uses mandrel bends, a 2 1/2" system would be fine.  A 2" mandrel bent system flows as much air as a 2 1/2" traditionally bend exhaust system due to the tight bends wrinkling shut.

:iagree:  There is a 3 year old Flowmaster 40 on my 86 D250; single exhaust with 2 1/4" pipe. One of the women at work today said it reminded her of her father's old pickup that had a pair of glasspacks.
