Ok, now they are saying I need new bearings in the rear and a new rear axle seal. Cost to repair, over $1k. These guys said when I dropped the car off that they could restore the whole car. I'm pulling the car tomorrow and finding someone else.

Is that an awfully high price, or am I missing something?

Yeah, that is spendy!!!  NAMC in Portland completely restored my rear end and swapped the weak no posi center for the strong 489 case they had extra in thier shop put 391's in it new brake drums and brake pads new brake lines and painted the whole thing for 1500 bucks. They are a real good group of mechanics If i could give em 50 grand to restore my whole car I would. They haved restored cars from europe if you got the money do a fanstastic restoration. They painted everything to factory.

Turns out the whole 3rd member is junk. Man, fixing up and old car is kind of like having a boat. The cash bleed is brutal!

Yeah! considering it about a grand for a NEW punkin! Pick up a old one for about 400 bucks but most of the time getting em back up to par is more work than a new ring and pinion.

It's real in that it's really what they want to charge you, but that doesn't mean it's a good price. As Neil said above, you can get a whole new center section ready to go for about $1000. Assuming that you even need axles, they aren't that expensive, and since the center section will already be set up you can do the rest of the work yourself pretty easily.
