Why do you say the radiator needs flushed "badly" if your coolant looks like mud start there.

Here is a pic of the vacuum advance the arrow is pointing at it. Disconnect the vacuum line going to it and take it for a drive to see if it helps with the missing problem like Chryco said. (I have a small block so my distributor is at the back of the engine, yours will be on the front)

Amy suggestions on a fan shroud like where I should get one and how much I should pay? And I know my radiator needs to be flushed because the jackass that dropped my motor put water instead of anti freeze. So I have rust water cooling my car(good mechanics in my area are not easy to come by) I rarelyy drive the car so flushing it has been kinda on the back burner. I'm thinking because it only overheard when idleing that the fan shroud and flush might solve that issue. The backfiring is a lil more complicated tho.

I'm more worried that you radiator isn't clogged.

You can get a 26" shroud for your radiator, but if you have a 22"... Good luck.

What does the rad cap look like , if it is old & the spring is weak it will not pressurize , A/F will resist boiling better too
