Consequences of over-torquing a 318 main cap?
« on: September 27, 2011 - 11:52:45 AM »
I asked this on moparts and got mixed answers, so i thought id ask here too.

I torqued my rear main cap to 130 ft. lbs instead of 85 ft. lbs by mis-reading the spec book.

It was my fault for misinterpreting, an idiot move. Now i am trying to avoid dropping the pan, but i suppose its not a big deal as i have not filled it with oil yet......

I'd be more worried bout bolt stretch more than anything. Sounds like you've stretched it pretty far @130 LBs.

I would, the potential alternatives will go through $40 pretty quickly. Was it line honed with the other bolts?

my guess is that the primary concern would be for the bolts to release tension from being over torqued and either break or end up not snug enuf.   Must have been pretty forgiving bolts.  I am not sure how much distortion may have been introduced to the caps themselves...maybe not as much as might be expected.

While it sucks, if you had ANY problems with that engine, you'd always wonder if it didn't have something to do with those over torequed bolts. Made the correct call...Let us know how it comes out...

It'll be interesting to see how that main bearing wears.  Maybe it will be ok.
