440 carb set up?
« on: September 26, 2011 - 08:19:02 PM »
I have a 1978 440 crate motor (stock), with 906 head from a 69 and standard trans.
It has the stock square bore intake.
What would be the best carb for this application. I'm trying to get as much horsepower without putting too big a carb on it.
Any help would be appreciated.

I will go with my usual choice ...
Proform 850 , 2 x the CI & an awesome carb , you can get it with a choke in the street version or the no choke race version whhich if the car is being in driven in warm weather as most are you really do not need a choke

Good suggestion from Chryco.

Another suggestion:
- 750cfm vacuum Holley and a stock intake manifold.
- I have such a set-up on my own car.
- I have exactly the same engine as you mentioned (´78 440 crate engine from Dodge dealership).
- I put ´70 Magnum cast iron intake manifold on that engine and topped it off with the said 750cfm vacuum Holley (and cast iron Magnum exhaust manifolds).
- I have driven that combo for 5 years, now. works effortlessly! (I have an automatic transmission, though)
