4 speed set up
« on: September 23, 2011 - 01:37:59 PM »
So I finally re-greased my hurst 4 speed shifting mechanism. I have the bolt in type of shifter with a 72-4 4 speed e body tranny. Does any one have a pic of a set up identifying which tabs are 1-2, 3-4 and reverse and which position and where they attach to the shifting mechanism? It would be a big help. When I move the shifter from the nuetral position, it moves the outer most (closest to the drivers seat) lever. Does this sound correct? :working:

the shifter spring loads into the 3-4 gate so in normal resting position , furthest away from the driver , you are in 3-4 gate which is the front lever [flat] on the trans , the first gate to the left with light spring pressure is 1-2 , rear lever [doglegged], the reverse is the next gate to the left inside the car with high spring pressure & uses the short flat lever

Thanks for the advise! For some reason, I ran out of threads on my 3-4 gear shifting rod, and still cannot connect it. I'm about 2 turns off. I put a drill bit through all the holes in the shifting mechanism in the nutral position so they are all lined up. Shouldn't the adjuster be somewhere in the middle of the threads when it is in the correct position?

Yes it should be in the middle of the threads , is the lever on backwards , the slot is rarely perpendicular in the lever . Possibly you have the wrong lever .

I see what your saying. I may have to flip the lever with the slot. I bet that works. I will try it tonight. Thanks again for your help.

I can't believe the difference it makes by lining it up and regreasing. I was going to buy the rebuild kit, but it really didn't look like anything was wore.

often that is the case , the parts are not significantly worn & just cleaning & lubing , & adjusting correctly makes a big difference .
