512 Stroker oil pickup
« on: October 17, 2011 - 10:14:49 PM »
The guy who built my 512 used an external oil pickup.  He said the stroke of the 512 did not allow the use of a internal pickkup tube.  I had a 7 qt 440 source pan & pickup.  Question is should I be able to use an internal oil pickup on a 512?  I am looking at a Milodon Hemi 6 qt pan to replace my 440 source pan as it sits a little low on my Cuda and would like to eliminate the external pickup if possible.  thanks

Also, since I have the 512 out I am going back over my choices for components and looking to get some better HP numbers if possible.  Here are what I used the first time.
440 source 512.50 stroker kit with .055 Dished pistons & forged crank
440 source Stealth heads with new locks installed.
H-beam rods w/ ARP 8740 Bolts
Lunati VooDoo 60304 Hyd Cam
•Advertised Duration (Int/Exh): 276/284
•Duration @ .050 (Int/Exh): 234/242
•Gross Valve Lift (Int/Exh): .513/.533
•LSA/ICL: 110/106
•Valve Lash (Int/Exh): Hyd/Hyd
•RPM Range: 2200-6400
When on the dyno it had a Mopar dual plane (Performer RPM) intake & 750 Demon mech secondaries ( I know too small)
This combination only made 476HP peak @ 5100 RPM( as far as they took the RPMs) and 591 torque at 3800 RPM.

I think the short block would be ok but not sure about the cam & heads?  I would think the 512 should be up around 600HP pretty easy if I had the right combo.

well all the 512 " stroker we have built use the internal oil pick up tube & Hemi pan with no issues
The new super stealth should be worth some power , I have been using custom solid cams in the 512s we build , what dyno was used , make as well as rear wheel or engine ?

Neil, Not sure what Dyno was used but it was an engine dyno and not a real wheel dyno.  Would a roller cam get me more HP?

Mike
It depends , the roller cams will make more power if they are solid rollers , the hyd rollers are really not a big advantage but to me a solid roller is too much expense & too finiky for daily street use .
With street  roller type specs using a solid flat tappet cam we are making around 400 RWHP on a Mustang dyno which reads to lowest so to me you are way down on power by 150-200 hp , & we are using iron production 915 or 516 heads & a Holley street dom intake .converted gross number are 630 hp & 730 Ft lbs .
Your compression will be a bit lower using alum heads , the super stealths should increase air flow & a single plane intake may  help although I have had good results from the RPM so that  is not the first place I would look .
Why did they stop the dyno run @ 5100 was the powr falling off already ? If so this is probably carb related , peak power should be 5600 shifting at 6000
The cam I normally use is the Lunati TF 60 / Tf 57 ground on a 110 Cl , you will find the lobe spec on pg 185 in their online catalog

Neil, I asked the shop to call me before they dyno'd the engine but guess what, no call.  They called the next day and gave me the sheet.  The large vacuum port on the back of the 750 Demon was no plugged so that is whey they started at 3200.  They said it wouldn't idle.  Anyway they screwed up the dyno run as bad as the engine.

I looked at Lunati's online catalog but page 185 comes up with Cheby small block stuff.  I'll do some more studying tonight.  Like the sound of a solid Cam!

570 / 582 lift , 252 / 255 duration @ .050  around 280* advertised . you can choose 3 bolt or single , I always go with 3 bolt & you can choose the CL @ 108 , 110 or 112 , I use 110 for street use with headers .

actually in 512" builds it is relatively mild , idles well makes half decent vacuum , good response , very drivable & pulls hard to 6000 rpm

Neil,
Do you have someone at Lunati that you work with that will know about this cam?  I think I'm going to order one next week.

Mike

Steve Slavik or Jeff , order a TF60 intake / TF 57 Exhaust , with a 110 Cl should work , order it in a Mopar Big block 3 bolt core , use Mopar lifters not Lunati , the groove in the lifter is too low & bleeds off oil , get a recommended spring pressure , use 10 * locks & retainers . Let me know if you need help

Thanks Neil, I will shout if I need help!  The 512 is going to my engine guy tomorrow to see if we can find out what made all of the crankcase pressure & the blue smoke.  Will let you know what we find.  :2thumbs:
