Advise? Not an E-body, but it is a MOPAR!
« on: October 18, 2011 - 10:30:55 PM »
OK this might be interesting for anyone who likes jeeps.  This is my 93 jeep wrangler, bad a$$ hunting vehicle, bought it for $4k 2 years ago, has 128,000 miles on it currently.  I had a cracked exhaust manifold so I disassembled everything for a replacement.  I know you guys only want E-bodies, but who cares? Hopefully know one will mind! :)

When I took a look at the intake and exhaust valves, something troubled me.  2 out of the 6 cylinders have a burnt exhaust valve.  What do you guys think? Overall everything is in good shape, the Jeep runs great, but does burn a TINY bit of oil. Is this bad enough to worry about? I don't want to spend any more money on it, so if it isn't horrible I'll leave it be.  Keep in mind it only gets driven during hunting season, and occasionally around town on pretty days!

It is a Mopar! I love Jeeps and have owned 3. My daily driver is a 94 Cherokee w/ 208K miles. Parts for these are plentiful and reasonable priced. That 4.0L is a great motor and taken care of will run forever. I say spend a few bucks and have peace of mind that it wont leave you stuck in the woods and no way to get your elk home.   :2cents:

4.o's were notorious for burning valves and destroying seats. Rebuild the head.
If you have a bad ridge in the #1 cylinder, then a complete overhaul is in order.
If I cant fix it, it's broke

Or stuck in the duck marsh with no way of getting my ducks and geese home lol... hopefully i can squeeze another season out of it. November 5th is when season starts here in Texas. I'm afraid if I have the heads rebuilt it won't be ready by then, which just can't happen.  MOPAR is my obsession, but when it comes to water-fowling, nothing compares.  It's in the blood!

My grandfather has built a few jeep projects.  A 40's Jeep willys a long time ago that he got in boxes when my family still ran our old hunting business, as well as a marsh buggy with a 2 cylinder Deusch (I believe that's how you spell it) German WWII  air cooled diesel backed by a very old jeep transmission, so he knows these very well.  If anyone wants pictures I'll post them it's a cool off road buggy. Anyways we used to drive until we got stuck then kept on walking.... worry about getting out after the hunt  :ylsuper:

I'd run it and plan on taking it out of commission to rebuild the head whenever you think you can put it down for a couple of weeks.

I run a Wrangler as well

35s, Rubicon, 6spd, bumpers, 12,000lb winch, cage, etc, etc. Will probably be on 37s with H1 Hummer wheels (double beadlocks) by this time next year.

Dang that's quite the rig there! I've always loved Jeeps, I like the YJ's though, most jeep guys don't like them because of the headlights, so you can get them for cheap and most are still in decent shape.
