Vehicle Weight...
« on: October 17, 2011 - 04:04:46 PM »
I've got a 1970 Cuda convertible with a 340 4-spd.  I'd like to get the weight of the car but I don't want to invest in a 4-corner scale system (or know someone that has one).  I dont necessarily need the corner to corner breakdown, front to rear will do.  I know there are weights off production literature, but I want to know what my car actually weighs.

I could run to the salvage yard scale, but how accurate are they (+/- 5lb...20 lb)?  This is the most obvious solution, but it got me to thinking...has anyone out there come up with a way to get vehicle weights that costs less than a 4-corner scale system, but is more accurate than a salvage yard scale? :clueless:

Go to your local drag strip during a test and tune and use their scale.

I've also seen scales at some moving companies, some drywall, construction supply places, and landscaping material providers. Most should be within 20# or so pounds of perfect.

Ask nice, I bet you can get weighed for free at almost any one of those places.

:iagree:
There is a transport weigh scale about 5 km from my house. I just parked the car on the scale when they were closed and looked through the window.

Thanks everyone...all great ideas!

I got to thinking, which is dangerous sometimes :naughty:.  I thought it would be cool to incorporate a weight scale into a hydraulic floor jack...kinda like a mobile mini scale in your garage.  What do ya think?  Great idea or bad idea???

not a bad idea , if you can make a small enough scale to be accurate on the end of a jack

It can be done, however, accuracy and repeatability are issues with that method.

Cheap way out may be a load checker. This is a scaled weight jack of sorts that measure weight required to deflect the corner a certain amount. www.speedwaymotors.com , search load checker, $180.
