Final Wheel/Tire Question
« on: October 20, 2011 - 02:59:38 PM »
Hi guys I know I'm beating a dead horse but I think I'm going to go with the wheel below for the front of the 71 Challenger.  I know I'm being paranoid but I just want to be certain.

I am going to use 245 60 15 tires.  Does anyone see any issues with the tire/wheel combo sticking out of the side?  Thanks

If not what would be the correct back spacing and offset that I would need for a 15 X 7 inch wheel?

Dave

I say it is going to rub because of insufficient backspace. No first hand experience with that exact wheel and tire combo, however, I had 15x8 with 4.75 backspace and only a 235 tire and it was close to touching the fender lip. Narrow the rim an extra inch and you might narrow the tire bulge .5" on each side. Is that enough to clear, I don't know.

Perhaps someone with a similar combo will chime in.

Thanks I hope so.  I would hate to spend the money for it to rub.

I have no first hand experience with those rims, so take my word with a grain of salt.

I don't think they will work either. Especially if you have the usual sag in your rear leaf springs. That just isn't enough backspacing to make me comfortable.

So what back spacing and off set should I go with for both the front and rear for a 15 X 7 and 15 X 8 wheel?  Thanks

I'm running the same size tires on 15x7 rallyes on the front of my 73 Barracuda.  Just confirmed my wheels have 4.25" backspacing so yours are going to be closer to the fender lip than mine.  I've had zero issues with my wheels/tires so not sure if .5" of additional backspacing is going to make a big difference or not.  I do run those same 15x7 TQ wheels on the front of my Roadrunner but with 225/70/15 tires so the fact that they fit great really doesn't help you much.

I'm running 235/60/R-15 on a 15x7 rim up front. I don't know the exact backspacing I believe it to be 4.5" or so?  Maybe the smaller tire would buy you some room?  :dunno:

So I should stick with 4.25" or 4.5" back spacing on both the front and rear?

In a perfect world, yes. It gives you more options in tires, but may not give you many options in wheels you like.   :dunno:

Maybe Chryco is too polite, but I'll mention on his behalf...

You should probably post your tire/rim/wheel questions in the tire/rim/wheel section.  He already moved one of your threads from General Discussion to that section and now you've started another.

For that matter, you should probably be asking these questions (related to the problem in the other thread) in that thread.  It helps keep thoughts concise and reduces the chance that we have repeated threads (not that anybody searches before starting a thread).
