My speedo quit working?
« on: September 25, 2012 - 08:01:23 PM »
It's not the cable as the odometer still works?  Any idea's?  The needle is swung around towards the bottom?

there is no direct link between the cable & speedo needle all there is is a magnetic drum & the needle follows that so if the drum is spinning the needle maybe stuck or the drum is not spinning with the cable

Can you disconnect the cable from the back of the speedo and confirm that it does spin when driving?  If it doesn't spin, the cable might be snapped, or could have somehow become disconnected at the transmission.  If it does spin, the problem is with the speedo or the connection from the cable to the back of the speedo.  The needle could just be stuck, or the speedo might need a rebuild.

Thanks for the replies guys!

The odometer works while driving so I know the cable is good. Cable is brand new.  I had the cluster out while doing the tranny/engine swap  and  swapped the needle on the speedo for one from a spare speedo I had as the old one was faded. I must have done something as it worked fine before I messed with it?  ::)

Well if you pull it to repair it, the speedo is easy to bench test.  Just hook a drill to the end of the cable and spin it up.

Brad,

Be honest. You were breaking in that new engine of your's and got carried away and buried the needle when you blew past 140 MPH, didn't you?    :burnout:

Given the problems he had with his Transmission, it wouldn't surprise me if the new transmission was driving the speedo gear backwards.
