SE Sail Panel Badge Questions
« on: March 25, 2011 - 05:49:28 AM »
I picked up a pair of SE badges for my 1970 SE.  I have a few questions.

1)  Will double stick tape on a gator grain vinyl top hold up?  Any particular brand or style?

2)  If I use the double stick tape, can someone provide some dimensions for the proper location of the SE badge on the sail panel.

Thanks!

It's pretty unlikely that 2-way tape will work. The originals were clipped on through a hole and had another small pin/hole for alignment. Repros only have a screw hole (because they're actually 71 Charger parts).

Well I thought I would offer some advice here and guess what I found out.........The drivers side measures this way........the center (mine does have a screw) measures 3 3/4" up from the lower edge of the vinyl top trim, and 5 1/2" from the inside of the top window (rain rail) trim on a level plane to the center.   On the passenger side.....3 1/4" up and 5" from the trim............These were factory holes.......and the trim was installed in factory holes .  Must have been drilled on a Monday morning........... :drunk:

On one of my cars I have some of the aftermarket SE badges that only have the one locator pin (as opposed to the 2 pin original badges).  Mine seem to stay on well using double sticky tape.

Hey! Thanks for the input everyone.  The measurements are a big help.  The previous owner replaced the vinyl top.  I felt around in these approximate locations, but couldn't find any remnants of holes.  They must have filled them with bondo.  This has the original green interior sail panels that are in pretty good condition. And, I'm afraid I'll damage them if I try to take them out.

I was on the fence about using double stick tape.  I found some 3M Plastic Emblem & Trim Adhesive (PN036001) that I'm going to try.  It's supposed to work with all sorts of materials, including vinyl, and metal.

Since these are die cast parts with a cavity on the backside, I filled them in with JB Weld, then filed and sanded the surface flat.  This will provide a lot more contact area for the adhesive.

I'll let you know how it works, and try to post some photos.  Again, I appreciate all the feedback.

Well, it's been about 5 weeks or so since I installed these using the 3M adhesive.

I thought I should try a cleaner to make sure the vinyl had no wax or oily residue that my prevent adhesion.  I tried some 3M tar and adhesive remover on a VERY small area right under where the center of the badge would be located.  Boy, sure glad I did that.  It removed the coloring of the vinyl on that spot.  So that was a no-go.

In the end I installed these with no further cleaning.  I didn't want to risk discoloring the vinyl that would still be visible.  I made a cardboard template that would locate them and support them while the adhesive set for 3-4 minutes.  I held them in place with my finger for that 3 minutes.  I also applied some blue painter's tape because these are fairly heavy, and I didn't want them to sag over night.

I'm pretty happy with the way they turned out.  Thanks again for all the input.  I'm glad I didn't need to drill a hole, and more importantly pull off the interior sail panel to install the nuts.
