Battery in the trunk question? Help?
« on: November 03, 2011 - 03:54:23 PM »
I have a older Challenger e-body and have a question about putting the battery in the trunk. Most other Mopars I have seen have the battery mounted on the passenger side. On the Challenger the gas filler tube is on the passenger side and would be close to where the battery would be bolted down, do you see any problems? Oh, I will be using a sealed battery and a Moroso battery box. Any thoughts or suggestions, e body owners?

Welcome
Put the battery where it fits best for you , I would use welders cable for battery cable , it is very flexable & heavily coated , I also recommend running the negative cable back to the trans mount rather than depending on the body for a ground

Also make sure you run a couple of ground straps from the engine to the cowl.

I located the battery enclosed in sealed box just behind the gas tank filler tube.  The trunk floor is not level there, so I made a shelf so the battery sits level.  The battery hold downs attach to the shelf, the shelf is bolted to the car unibody/trunk floor on each side of the rear frame rail.  The trunk lid hinge arm clears the front of the box easily, and full size spare tire clears everything also.
As mentioned I ran one engine ground strap from the back of the intake manifold to the threaded bolt for the voltage regulator, and a full size battery cable from left front cylinder head to threaded bolt that used to hold battery tray.  Always attach cables to threaded bolts not to sheet metal screws IMO.

The batteries are always mounted on the passenger rear to add weight to the right rear tire to aid in traction. Due to the rotation of the rear axle, that side needed more downforce. Had my Challenger since 1980. I had 456 gears in the 8-3/4 so I used to race anyone that dare to challenge me. I used to have my battery in the trunk years ago.

Since Challengers have such a small trunk, I moved it back to and use the space for tools and  road supplies for my long road trips.  There is a nice spot for the battery right up in front again.
