My brakes are KILLING me
« on: April 06, 2012 - 08:59:47 PM »
Constant problem since I changed from front drum to front disc.
I noticed when I parked the car the brake lights stay on, unless I lift up on the brake pedal.
Above 55mph, the front end rattles like a spaceship re entering the atmosphere. But if I pull up on the brake pedal with my other foot, it's smooth sailing. Also, when I take my foot off the gas pedal the car slows down way too fast, however if I again pull up on the brake pedal, it coasts along just fine. Another thing is if I go through a drive thru like McDonalds, when I stop at one window to pay, and then they say go to the next window- when I take my foot off the brake the car stays still. But again, if I pull up on the brake pedal the car really goes. It's not a hemi so I shouldn't be getting 6 mpg but I feel the engine is working too hard as if to overcome being driven while the brakes tighten up.
The place that restored my car installed the brakes- it's been back to them a dozen times, nothing works.
They changed the master cylinder and the booster. I posted a video of it on you tube and will provide the link-
but beware, at the last second of the video I used the "F" word.
 ANY SOLUTIONS?????????

:iagree: A very minor adjustment to the length of the pushrod is
probably all that's needed. You did use a disc/drum m/c didn't you?
If I cant fix it, it's broke

Maybe this might help? :dunno: Doesn't have a picture to compoare to what you have now though?  :pullinghair:

You could always test to see if this is the problem by adding a couple washers temporarily between the booster and firewall and seeing how that works?
Can you post a picture of the booster ? Showing whats behind it at the firewall?

Found better link...

Not sure if this would work, but what about a stronger return spring for the pedal?

"Understeer" is when you hit the fence with the front of the car. "Oversteer" is when you hit the fence with the rear of the car. "Horsepower" is how fast you hit the fence. "Torque" is how far you take the fence with you.

My bet is you have a 4 wheel drum master on the car still , the drum brkaes have a 10 PSI residual pressure valve behind the brass fitting the line seals against in the master , you can either replace the master with one designed for front disc or pull the brass fitting with a drywall screw & remove the residual pressure vale , reinstall the brass fitting & do up the line & bleed it
