Questions as I get started
« on: November 09, 2011 - 10:10:29 AM »

I am starting where I left off in the 90s on my burnt orange v code.

Starting questions as I work on the body....  the hood, doors and fenders were sanded down to bare metal in the 90s so I have flash rust and the same with the unibody.

I am now using 3m bristle disc to clean and de-rust the panels and body.

Tell me about epoxy primers and fillers and sealers, self etching stuff? and when do I use them!!??  keep in mind that body still needs welding repairs and panels need filler repairs.

Many THanks!!

I would start with the repairs before removing surface rust.  The less time the metal is bare the better. Then epoxy, then filler.

thanks Dutch, followed your restoration thread... :worshippy

thanks for the advise, I got lost because I read that said primer needs to be sealed with-in a week?

Also, I wonder what I should do when I encounter filler as I strip of paint... leave it or go to metal and start over.  (its filler on metal not epoxy primer as suggested here but looks solid)

when you`re that far in, take all filler off and start all over. That`s the only way to know what you`re working with... if there`s any trace of rust under the filler, it will come off eventually. Maybe the pro`s have something usefull to say about the sealer.  I finished small portions at a time , I was not working in a heated environment, so humidity was my enemy. Removing paint, weld, hammer/dolly where I needed to, then sand / clean the part and epoxy asap. With all filler and blocking work, most panels on my car were epoxied probably 3 times before I could apply a high build primer, so I would worry too much about the sealer...  :dunno:
