need to find a new starter for my 4spd manual trans

im having a hell of a time trying to find a new starter locally and im trying to avoid the week of shipping from ordering online.

but all the std parts stores do not list an option for a 70 340 6pack or even a option for a manual trans either.

all the starters i find have the half nose cone that an auto trans would need.

i need to find a mini-starter for a 4spd man.

(motor and trans are not orig. to the car) so is there something else i can look up (different vehicle) that will accept the starter i need?

I guess I didn't know there was a difference in the starters for the manual trans.  I know the small high torque starters that came on the 5.2 and 5.9 magnum motors work just fine on the older cars.  Try getting a starter from a mid 90's Dakota.

4 spd starters are no different from auto starters , they all are supposed to have the nose on them to center the starer in the belhousing

I thought I was going crazy for a minute there.  That's what I thought too.  I've got a 92 Dakota starter on a BB engine so I know they fit both BB's and SB's.

my old one was a non name brand (couldnt find any branding) chrome starter with no nose cone. looked like a traditional aircooled vw starter with the motor and noid attatched to it

i got one yesterday from autozone from a 92 dakota v6 2wd. i fit!

tried turning it over and its slow, weak and quiet sounding, but also has a high pitch whine noise as well like its trying to work too hard.... (100% charge on the battery according to my trickle charger thats been connected for about 72hrs) i suspect my ground cable may be insufficient. its a 4ga that runs straight from the battery post to the front of the driver side head, where its bolted.

to me, it seems like the ground needs to run 1. to the engine and 2. to the body some where. it seems like the amount of ground points are insufficient. i am considering running a additional 4ga from the head (where the other line is connected) to the body...somewhere. there seems to be a grounding point near the battery on the fender area.

how is the factory ground wire ran?

if that doesnt fix it, i may have a crappy battery. its an optima red top which suposedly are great batteries, but i have never had the best of luck with them

The factory negative cable runs to the DS head.  There is a smaller wire that runs to the rad support.  That's all that were originally on my early 73.  The later cars got one from the back of the PS head to the firewall.  I can't say if the earlier years had one back there at all.  Since your not worried about originallity...run all the ground wires you want.  I doubt you can have too many.

i took a wire brush where it mounts to the head and used a fresh new bolt and washer too. its got plenty of power now on a full battery. i would still like to try running an additional ground wire.
