Keep losing dash lights on 03 Sebring Convert
« on: November 15, 2011 - 09:18:44 PM »
Can anyone give me any ideas.  My moms 2003 Sebring Limited Convert keeps losing the dash lights and the dealership has no clue what could be causing it.  The lights go off for a while and then come back on all by themselves.  Everytime we have brought the car in, the lights have been working so they can not find anything wrong with it.  Is there some kind of a circuit breaker on the dash lights vs a typical mini fuse?  Any common areas that might have wiring problems that I can look?  Obviously, this is not a problem during the day but with daylight savings having the clocks roll back, it is starting to get dark at 4 pm around where I live.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

If it was an E Body I would guess the dimmer switch :)
Breakers and fuses shouldn't go in and out.  They will typically trip/blow and need to be reset/replaced before working again.
It actually sounds like a bad connection somewhere.

Most times it's one of two possible causes. Either a bad connection at the back of the cluster where the wonderful Chrysler engineers did this on the Neons, was to put two electrical connectors fastened into the dash panel.

Or....Bad "dimmer" switch for the dash lights. Good luck and let us know if this helps.

funny thing is that it is JUST the instrument cluster and nothing else.  The dimmer switch still works the car as the lights for the hvac and radio get dim and brighter so Im kinda guessing it is either a bad ground for the cluster OR a pinched wire somewhere.

These cars not only have electrical issues, but the engines and transmissions aren't all that either. Chrysler Cirus, Sebring, Dodge Stratus, etc. are great money makers for me.

had a car once that would lose the dash lights an the gauges would act up sometimes and it was the plug to the back of the dash as the newer ones have a screw that tightens the plug up,,once I tighten up the screw my issues were solved ,, wont hurt to check something like that as the vibration caused the plug to have a bad connection,,other than that check the grounds and even on the power train connections can have a weak ground an cause problems
