Speedo Cable firewall grommet

I have a new set of grommets for the body of the car and one of them is for the speedo cable. The old one was looking pretty ragged. Looking at the grommet, the center hole is very small and I'm not sure how to get it back on. The speedometer end of the cable is a LOT bigger than the hole in the grommet and the trans end is even bigger. Any thoughts?

That's a tough one.

The replacement speedo cable I got had the grommet already on the cable. I can't see how you'd get it on there once the ends have already been put on...

I ran into the same thing with the speedo cable.  I just cleaned up my original one because I didn't want to risk breaking the plastic end. I'm sure they expand more than you think though.  Can you try spraying some lubricant on them to aid the installation?  I didn't think my new E-brake cable grommet was going to stretch over the cable end but it did.  I think I sprayed some penetrating oil on it first.

You probably thought about this already, but I'd leave the original one on while trying to install the new one, just in case it gets wrecked. If you get the new one on successfully then you can just cut the old one off.

I probably should have left the old one on but I got a bit ahead of myself. I didn't really want to but as a last resort I was thinking of slicing it and putting it on directly. Not really the best choice but I'd think it would seal pretty tight.

Don't cut it!  It will pull right on easier then you think.  Install it from the end that goes to the back of the speedo.  You can use some lube if it makes you feel better.

Well it wasn't especially easy but it did go on. Went out to the shop to give it another go. Put some lube on it and it stretched enough. It did tear the center part of the grommet a bit but I turned that side down to not be visible.
