I was watching some of the coverage yesterday on the Mecum webcast with the slight delay. Not enough Mopars to be sure!
I did hear that '71 N code Challenger convertible sold for $42K, which seemed like decent money for it, as it had a lot of little stuff wrong with it. With its "hair", nearly 45K when you factor in the buyers 6% premium seems like fairly strong money.
There was a '70 Challenger R/T 383 4 speed that bid to 40K reserve not met, and a '71 Challenger V code 4 speed RT/"SE" that bid to $85K reserve not met, both seemed like strong money, but I questioned if either one was "real money" or had been shill bid to near what the seller was hoping to get. The N code had a lot of little issues wrong, so if the bidding was real, the guy should have taken the 40K and ran.
The V code was beautiful, but we all know there were no Challenger SE's in '71 (A78's had formal roof but were not SE's), so the roof badges were incorrect, had a plated booster instead of painted black, no doubt some other incorrect issues that wouldn't have happened if the car had been restored by someone who had done their homework, so 85K was probably a pretty good price for the seller, if in fact the bidding was real.
