rear spring and ride height
« on: January 21, 2005 - 08:36:04 PM »
we put a 440 in a 318 car. rear of car was riding too low, so we had air shocks pumping up the rear to raise it to clear wide tires. This made the ride very harsh obviously.
I replaced the 30 yr old 318 springs (which were both broken where they wrapped around front bushing), put in summit racing extra heavy duty springs for 440 and hemi cars.
got rid of the air shocks for summit racing shocks (adjustable).
To make sure it is high enough, I also added 6 inch shackles (instead of the 4 inch originals).
I should explain, we are going for the rat rod look with the rear sitting above the tires instead of tucking them in the wheel wells. I Just love the 70s look I guess.

To my surprise, when I set the car back on the ground, it was exactly the same height as before without the air shocks holding it up, barely clearing the tires. About 3 inches lower than I expected.
The extra heavy duty springs dont seem to be any stronger than 30 year old broken originals. :dontknow:
Without the 2 inch longer shackles, the car would actually be lower than it was.

Any ideas what went wrong here? I checked the part numbers on the springs and they are correct according to summit.

I also added frame connectors during this. Could this be transfering more weight to the rear?
I want to get the rear to be about 3 inches above the tires and its barely 1 inch. 25.5 inch diameter tires on 14 inch rims.

how many leafs are in each side?  One mans extra heavy duty is another mans super stock springs.I went thru something similar with a superbee of a customer. he bought superstock springs to replace his and they were one less leaf than stock ...LOL for example JC Whitney's extra heavy duty springs are everyone elses stock

I would not use 6 inch shackles on a 'CUDA.. They will interfere with the rear valance and dink it up
causing cracks and bends

Sounds to me like the springs are heavier but do not have any extra arch to them. Did you put an old one
and a new one next to each other while they were both off the car?

To me, the seventies rat ride has to have n50s sticking out on each side ;)

As stated above , the strenght of the spring & the arc are totally different , , using a long shackle does nothing to raise the car , the rear of the spring is softer &you just push the spring down

there are 6 leafs on each side. the pass side has a stub leaf that sticks forward. the drivers side has a stub leaf sticks back. (the stubs are included in the 6 count)
I found a broken torsion bar adjustment bolt on the drivers side front. the torsion bar was cranked up too high and the bolt broken off.
I cut out the old one with a torch and replaced the adjuster. then I set the front ride height and balanced side to side. looks good up front.
after all that, the drivers side rear sits 5/8 inch lower than pass side rear. very noticable.
the pass side rear is above the tire about 2 inches and looks about what I wanted now that car is balanced all around.
just need to get the drivers side up a bit.

i did not compare the arch between the new springs and the old.

does anyone have experience with helper springs? some are adjustable and could be used to add more arch to the drivers side.
this may make the ride more harsh?
i could add a leaf to this side from the old springs?

it looks like the drivers side spring is just not matched well to the pass side or this corner of the car has more weight on it for some reason.
you can see that spring is more flattened out than the other.
i did compare the arch before starting and both the new springs were the same.

is this rat enough?

That's not a rat ride

You have to have primer spots and rust holes with a big antenna on the back and missmatched wheels

Did I type that or just think it :-\

Nice ride b5
