Is there a trick to removing pillar / window trim?
« on: December 02, 2011 - 05:32:14 PM »
Refinishing the entire interior and that means all the plastic and metal trim around the windows...

The other day I undid the screws on the a-pillar thinking it would just come off, but it didn't.

One of the 1st rules my dad taught me in relation to taking things apart was that, generally, if you have to force it, something isn't right.

I think this is especially true of plastic interior pieces. :-)

So... whats the deal? Is there a trick to removing these things?

Good point. In addition to the two screws, there is some light caulk.  My recommendation, put some light heat on it from a blow dryer and it should come loose.

When I took my interior apart, the A pillar pieces were 'glued' to the pillar by the butyl that was for sealing the windshield. During the twenty years that elapsed since the windshield was first installed, the butyl sealant slowly oozed out in the direction of the A pillar trim. Effectively gluing it to the a pillar. Cmaniacs suggestion of a little heat from a hair dryer is the method I used to release it. SLOWLY. Too much heat can ruin the trim.
