71 challenger pitman arm trouble
« on: December 17, 2011 - 04:56:32 PM »
the old one is crap

bought one from autozone but the diameter is too big ....

we looked through the years 71 - 74 and its the same part #

we looked at the 70 and its a different part number...

we measured the diameter on the 71 pitman arm and its 1.0xx

the 70 arm is 1.125 so its still too big anyone run into this ??

where can i get a pitman arm without burning a massive hole in my pocket

Ya there is a small and large, you obviously have the small. 66-72 are the small 73 and up are the big I believe is how it works.

thanks for the help

i have another question.

i just received the other pitman arm and when installing it the pitman arm doesnt go up

i searched the forum for a similar issue and i found one post that had the picture of the pitman arm with the nut and clip about 2 threads deep

when i go to install the nut and clip it barely if anything grips 1 thread maybe even half a thread i dont know if thats ok or not... my pops just went to measure the diameter of both the old arm and new arm he seems to think that its not the same diameter.....

Does the new one you have ... does it have a master spline? I ask as the firm feel one I put on last spring didn't and you have to get it in just the right spot? I'm wondering if you don't have the master spline engaged in the correct position? :dunno:  Just a thought?

.... or is both parts really clean? If any crap were to get in the splines that might hold it up?

the nut pushes it on.

no it doesn't ... the torque is set to 175 and the nut wont budge ... we managed to push it up 1 thread and thats all we can do for now.
we
will see what they say when we take it in for alignment

And you do understand what Brad was saying about a master spline, which is also called a blind spline, being lined up with it's matching double width partner spline on the sector shaft? If you've got the blind spline thing under control and it still doesn't fit, you could use a brake cylinder hone on the arm to gain a few thous. Using a pair of big eyes, check the splines on both shafts, there may be a burr that a triangular needle file will cure. Good luck
