Still figuring on these parking lights
« on: March 13, 2012 - 08:44:31 PM »
Okay guys, here are two pictures of what I have on the front of my 73 chally.  Somebody I reckon has wired these in.  I have 3 wires that run down to a bulb socket for my parking lamps.  Even when the real  parking lamps that go on these challengers are a housing with the bulb socket built in and about a foot of cord with a plug on the end.  What is on my car is just the bulb socket and the wires.  I put new bulbs in and they work (shine, signal), but I'm just trying to figure out what to do.  I'm guessing one of these three wires runs to a ground somewhere way back there, since they light up without the bulb socket contacting any metal?  Should I splice into these wires and plug into my parking lamp housings I have (don't have the lenses. PM me if you have some you wanna sell), or should I buy some off the shelf lights and splice them in and make an aftermarket look? Just trying to decide what to do, sorry if this didn't make any sense.

Yup, the third wire is the ground so you don't need to ground the housing. I would attach those light sockets to the housings and buy a pair of lenses.  :2cents:

thanks for the reply dodj. How would I go about attaching them to my housing, since it has a bulb socket built in, with those cords running back from it.  Didn't see a way to take it apart, but may have to look again

If the original sockets are still good, go that way. I thought (misunderstood I guess) you were looking for options to replace them because they were no good.
My housings had corroded sockets. The sockets are have a lip that is rolled outward to grip the housing. I just bent the lip up and epoxied new sockets in place. There were no repros around when I was doing this. I found something similar, like what you have and made it fit. As you might guess, total originality is not important to me.  Function and mostly original appearance is.

well went out and looked today and the bulb sockets that are hanging from the car are much larger than the sockets on my parking lamp houses.  Pretty sure they fit the same size bulb, but the actual diameter of the housing is much larger
