1973 challenger. 340 build
« on: September 02, 2012 - 11:48:48 AM »
I am ready to start on my 340 engine for my E Body.  I want to add a pro charger or something similar.  My question is this what cam, pistons (compression ratio) to run.  What heads should I run, valve size.  What intake and carb.  I want somewhere between 450-550 hp at the wheels.  Any help is appreciated.

Compression will need to be around 8.5 to 1. You will need to run an intercooler, and about 15 psi to get those numbers. Splurge on the bottom end components forged pistons, h beam rods, and a quality aftermarket forged crank. Cam duration will need to be kept in the 260-280 range, too big and you'll shove fuel and air out the exhaust. However, a split duration camshaft that's heavier on the exhaust will help, especially with a low restriction exhaust on a supercharger, just watch the overlap. Also head flow is still a factor, so a port and polish, 3 angle valve job, will help the engine make that much more power. With a supercharged motor intake choice isn't to critical any quality single or dual plane will work just fine.
