Trouble bleeding brakes
« on: January 21, 2012 - 04:47:42 PM »
The proportioning valve was leaking in my '73 Challenger so I replaced it with a used OE unit.  Changed the master cylinder while I was at it because I didn;t know how old it was and they're cheap.  Bench bled the master and installed.  Everything bleeds good at the prop valve.  Bled all three output lines as normal.  Can't get anything to happen at the rear brakes.  There's definitely air in the lines but when I crack the blleder screw or the line to the wheel cylinder - nothing. Pedal doesn't go down (someone helping me inside car) so of course nothing comes out.

Any ideas?

If your not getting any action at the rear brakes whatsoever, I would take a second look at the proportioning valve.  Sounds like it's blocked up.

Valve isn't blocked because I can bleed it at the rear brake line outlet so fluid is going through the valve.  Didn't try bleeding them a lot since the pedal wouldn't move when I cracked the bleeder on either side.  Tried a couple of times each side.  No fluid to the rear cylinders yet.

what do you mean pedal wont go down is the bleeder open all the way. not trying to insult you. if lines were dry it will take a while to get the air out.i would do each bleeder at lease 10 or more times.do the driver side first.

If pedal doesn't move with bleeder valve open then nothing is being passed through the line - air or fluid - correct?

Work through the problem step by step.  It bleeds at the prop valve but not at the wheels?  Try cracking the union at the rubber hose to the rear axle.  Or the brass tee on the axle, or the lines going to the wheel cylinders.  Chryco is right, sometimes the rubber lines fail.  Sometimes previous owners "repair" leaky rear slave cylinders by pinching off the steel line.  If you don't get any fluid at the rear axle unions, then your problem is between there and the prop valve.  If fluid comes out at the axle, then your prolem lies between there and the bleeders.  Happy hunting!

If you crack the bleeders to the rear,No, the pedal won't move. You could try openin g the line to the wheel cylinders.
Maybe they are seized or just slightly stuck. Do you know when the last time the rear brakes actually worked?

I love deer hunting but not crazy about brake fluid hunting!

It's the rubber hose.  I get fluid from the metal line going into the hose but nothing at the line running to the rear wheel.  Time to get a hose.  You sure have to take your time with the fittings on the metal lines that haven't been cracked in almost 40 years!

I am glad you traced it , I had a bad hose I changed last week , it would let fluid through but the brakes would stay on as the fluid could not return through the hose
