vinyl top Glue removal
« on: January 26, 2012 - 12:03:33 PM »
Hello all,

I tore off the vinyl top I installed a year ago and need to know the best product to removed the tacky glue. I used the 3m vinyl top glue wich doesn't work real well. As soon as it gets hot out, it looses its adhesion. I could literally pull the top off the car when it was hot out. So now I am going to have a new top professionally installed, but need to remove the glue first. I bought 3m adhesive cleaner, but I was wondering if there is something that works better. I tried to fix the B pillars with DAP contact adhesive, but that didn't work so well either.

I've had good luck with wax & grease remover on adhesives if you don't want to damage the paint/primer underneath the vinyl top. Rubbing alcohol may work as well.  If you're going to re-prime, then stronger solvents can be used - Acetone, Paint thinner, MEK, etc.
