Today I pulled the grill, headlight bezels and trim rings. The "chrome" is actually polished aluminum with a clear anodizing. It was really nasty. Faded, milky and chipped all to hell.
I used paint stripper to strip the old paint off, then oven cleaner to get the anodizing off. I used the stuff in the spray bomb and it took 3 soakings of 15 minutes each to get it off. I scrubbed with a brillo pad.
There were plenty of dents and dings, so I worked the dents out and then sanded them smooth. 150, 220 400 then 800. Hit it with some 0000 steel wool then used my polishing wheel to polish them up. They look great! Iplan on clear coating them with urethane and then shooting the RT style black using SEM trim black.
Next up I will clean up the grill, strip it, polish the bottom strip then clear coat and paint the black. The inside grill part I am going to paint flat black. I've stripped the CHallenger logo and am going to repaint that.
I'll get some pictures as it progresses.
