What should I choose?
« on: February 05, 2012 - 04:59:13 PM »
I have the opportunity to pick up a 67 Dodge Monaco 500 with a 383 2bbl/727, AC, power windows, power seats, buckets, all the chrome but a few rusty bits for 3000. I'm looking to swap the engine/trans into the Challenger and I have a 4bbl intake for a 383 sitting in my garage. Or there's a 440 4bbl/727 with new oil pump, headers and aluminum intake. Both engines are running but I haven't heard the 440 since it's out of the car. The 440 came out of a motor home, but it's a 1970 block. I don't know what's been done to it internally yet but I'm going to see it tomorrow.
I'll post pics of the Monaco when I figure out how to send from my new phone

Ok, my  :2cents:-- Take the 440 and build it up while it's out of the car.

Let someone else have the Monaco and the engine and restore it.  Otherwise what would happen with the body once the engine is out?  The 338 has the closed chambered heads probably but my guess with the 2 barrel carb it has small valves, not the more desireable larger valves.

Just have to be aware of the ins and outs of the motorhome 440s, I think like the water pump outlets are on the opposite side.  Other little things too.

The 383s are nice but a healthy 440 I've heard are faster.  Some say a 383 Challenger is not much faster than a 340 Challenger due to the weight trade off.

Besides, 440 will give you more  :burnout:

I've been leaning to the 440 too. I've always felt that a Challenger NEEDS a 440 or a Hemi, but that's just my personal opinion. The guy that owns the engine apparently pulled it from a motorhome and dropped it into a Roadrunner or something and then pulled it to change to something else.
The only reason I would go for the Monaco is that the parts I sell could offset the price of a build.

That seems reasonable to sell the Monaco parts to offset the sale but what parts are you going to sell?  You're going to keep the engine/tranny.  IMO not a lot more to sell unless you know some people looking for Monaco parts which may not be a lot of people.  Not like you're parting a Road Runner or something or the sort.  Just my  :2cents::wave:

I finally got a chance to see the 440 today. It's a 3830930 440 7 casting with 3769902 heads on it. It comes with the stock intake and an aluminum Wieland (spelling)along with a full gasket set. It's got headers with it, but they're for a 70 Charger. It comes with a mini starter, alternator and all the bits. It has a 727 with the long tailshaft already on it, but if I want the one with the trans brake I can take it too. The water pump needs to get changed over, but they told me two places down here that have them in stock.
If I pick it up I'm going to have an engine guru friend pull it all apart so it can get painted and he can make sure bearings, rings etc are good, and fix anything that needs doing. I think I'll have him throw in a cam that's a little less motor home friendly.
