Adding power steering - How to decide what pulleys to use
« on: February 20, 2012 - 10:36:35 PM »
I am starting to gather parts to add power steering to my 72. Right now car has a single groove crank pulley - manual steering and no a/c. I have a 4 groove crank pulley and a power steering pump with pulley and brackets. Doing some quick measuring and positioning it looks like the p/s pump is going to line up with the 2nd groove from the front which leaves the back 2 grooves for a double belt for a/c and alternator. I will probably do the power steering first so my question stems from the water pump pulley mainly. The set up now uses a 6 1/2" diameter crank pulley with a 6 7/8" water pump pulley. The new crank pulley is 7 3/8" in the back 2 grooves, the front of which lines up with the water pump pulley. However there is not going to be enough clearance between the 2 pulleys for the new crank pulley to go on, there is probably only 3/8"-1/2" clearance between the 2 now. Since I will be running it with p/s but no air at first I can't switch to the w/p pulley that will move that groove forward to match the power steering so I need a smaller one for now so I can run crank-water pump-alternator and then crank-p/s pump.
Then once I add a/c if I am correct the belt setup will be - back 2 crank-a/c-alternator, then the next one forward will be crank-water pump-power steering. Since there seems to be so dang many different pulleys out there how do you make sure you get correct diameters so everything spins correct speeds. The p/s pump pulley I have now is 6 7/8" diameter and I see one on eBay that is 5" diameter - I would think that big of a difference would cause problems if not matched to the correct diameter crank pulley.

Then I will have the one extra groove in the front that I guess is for smog pump but not sure.

So to summarize the pulleys I currently have:
Crank now - 6 1/2"
Water pump now - 6 7/8"
4 Groove crank pulley - front 7 1/8" (this one must be smog pump), 2nd- 6 1/2" and back 2- 7 3/8".
P/S pump - 6 7/8"

I would order a new set of matching  pulleys but in your case you are changing twice  so you will have to match something up to work until you add A/C  which can be not so easy , I have a collection of 50 pulleys gathered over the years & I still never have the right pulley !!
