Electric remote hood release switch
« on: March 03, 2012 - 11:57:04 AM »
I have a 91 Chrysler New Yorker electric trunk release that I plan on using for a electric hood release on my Cuda (to keep people out of the engine bay). There has been some information on the internet but no one has a wiring diagram to do this modification. The electric hood release has thick black wire (green with blk strip at connector) and a small tan wire with blk strip. I think the black wire is the power wire? Can anyone help with the wiring of this?

Thanks!

sounds simple enough , you should have power & ground & a simple solinoid to pop the latch , I bet it would work with either as ground & power . Do you have a picture of it ??

I figured it out yesterday. The black (green/blk) wire is the main power and the tan with blk strip is for the trunk light tp come on when the trunk is opened. The unit is grounded by the screws. I'm thinking I still should use a relay so the plastic release button doesn't see the full load when pushed?

I doubt it , it would only see load for a second , although a relay never hurts either

Sounds like a cool idea, but if you have battery issues, might be a challenge to open the hood.  How about the manual hood release cable system? Just an idea.

I did this on mine simply due to the cost of cable systems. I took a broken hood release lever and attached a tab that plunged a momentary switch. I didn't use a relay, but did blow a couple of fuses until I settled on the right fuse (3A, I think). Keep in mind that the electric load when idling is different than engine off due to the voltage drop.

I think I posted pics...do a search.

Oh, and the hood can still be opened by putting an offset or shorty screwdriver into the old key tab.
