340 "Enhancement"
« on: March 22, 2012 - 12:52:49 AM »
Looking to spice up my 340. I'd like some ideas on what I can bolt on and how much it will help in hp. I don't want to pull the engine or do anything that can't be restored to original. I've got a '73 Cuda with a '69 Barracuda S, X-Head (2.02" intake valves, 1.60" exhaust valves) 340 engine, 10.5:1 compression ratio, rated at 275 HP@5000rpm, torque 340 lb-ft @ 3200rpm. It's a 4-speed with a 3.23:1 rear end. Any thoughts and opinions will be appreciated.

Cam , , Better heads swirl port or RHS , storkers kits or the best as you increase the torque substantially with a longer throw crank

Vortec or Paxton blower kit. They have a new low cost bolt on kit out there with self lubricated bearing that eliminate the need to oil lines. Your compression is a bit high for this so you'll also need a timing retard unit and probably a methanol injection kit. May also need a boost reference fuel pump. Not a cheap approach, probably between $3-5 grand for this, but it will boost power.

I'll throw in my 2-cents and say add a cam kit (less then .500 lift, single springs, retainers, pushrods, timing chain, and possibly adjustable rockers) and a matching intake. Headers, and carb (as needed). Block and heads can stay in place.

The FBO Re-curved distributor and ECU kit really helps also. Probably need to run octane booster to allow the proper advance for the setup. Appox. $2000 depending on exhaust and carb setup.

My 340 has TRW forged10.5-1 Pistons,2.02 heads,Comp Cams .480 280/280 and a 3.91 Sure Grip.Had a Offy tunnel ram with (2)465CFM Holleys and Aluma coated headers when I built it 20 years ago.The previous owner that had the car before I bought it back, let it sit undisturbed for 16 years.Only has about 750 miles on the engine. When I got it home I sold the Offy,Holleys and headers and bought a RPM Air Gap,750 Edelbrock and Hooker Super Comp Ceramic Headers.
I remember the engine running excellent with the old system.I expect the new system to be better. The engine will be taken to a race shop here in Vegas to be looked at.16 years sitting is a long time.
