Cutting out mufflers
« on: March 24, 2012 - 10:51:17 AM »
My wife took her 2012 R/t to the local performance shop who has complerted work on some of my cars concerning exhaust systems so I like them.  She wants to get a little more growl out of the stock system.  We inquired about magnaflow mufflers.  He took a look and suggested taking out the stock mufflers, running an "S" pipe and leaving the resonators and the rest of the system in.  Has anyone done this before?  How loud would it be?  She doesn't want it to sound like a drag car.  I'm sure giving it more flow will increase power but.....

I can't say with a new car but with my old 86 Regal and 81 Malibu I had I just ran the cats with no mufflers at all. I liked it but everyone is diffferent?

I don't know about now, but in the old days running an exhaust without mufflers actually decreased performance.  Had to do with exhaust scavaging and you could loose some low end torque.  Also back then, some people mentioned about burning exhaust valves.  Not sure if this is still the case.  :dunno:

Yeah I'm not real sure about this.  I am leaving for the week for work so I haven't had a chance to look under the car yet to confirm what he said.  I think I would be more comfortable with Magnaflows and no resonators but I could be wrong.  I think I will have her wait till I get back to look into it some more.

Try Rick on MoparAction Mag. He will answer ur ?

After u open page click on TECH and click on submit tech question

Some states have emissions tests and inspection so removing resonators would be a NO.

Thanks AARuFAST.  I did give Rick a try.  He said that he has never heard of that but it might work.  My wife deicded to wait on the muffler issue.  She is thinking about a throttle body and a CAI. She needs that power.

Cutting out the center muffler is pretty loud! We ended up removing the rear resonators and leaving the center , it sounds perfect just driving next to here and her stomping it at 50 mph is sweet! .But I would not suggest either one unless you get a progrmmer to turn off the cylinder deactivation as the sound it makes slipping into v-4 mode is not cool!  Go to blastin bobs on the web and they have all the different exhaust tones from real cars after the exhaust choices
