Spring to tire clearance

How much space between the rear tire and the leaf spring would be enough to be safe? 1/4", 1/2" 1"?  :dunno:
The tire is a 315/35/17 and I looking at about 3/8" clearance at the moment.

3/8 should be fine , unless you are corner near 1 g the sidewall deflection that high up will be minimal

3/8ths should be plenty, that size tire has barely any sidewall to flex anyway
70 Cuda, 7.0L Gen-III Hemi, Viper T56 w/9310 gearset, 3.91's, Megasquirt MS3x v3.57, Innovate wideband, Firm Feel upper arms, torsion bars, springs and strut rods, QA1 DA shocks. I did everything on this car except the fancy paint stuff and I drive it...and I can't seem to stop messing with it....

I've run as low as 1/4" without contact. Larger, softer sidewall tires like drag slicks may be at greater risk of contact than more rigid street tires.

Typically what I've seen is compliance in the suspension bushings allows the whole rear assembly to side load and move as a unit over the sidewall deflecting that high up off the ground.
