Replace single dash speaker with pair of 3.5"
« on: May 06, 2012 - 04:03:54 PM »
I noticed that over the past several years there have been a number of threads posted regarding replacement of worn out 4"x10" single-cone dash speakers with a pair of 3.5" two-ways.  Some folks stated they doubt the quality of "stereo" sound produced by the smaller speakers so close to each other, and others claim the sound waves would cancel each other.  However, there are some who said they successfully mounted two smaller speakers side-by-side and are extremely satisfied with the results.  As in most things, quality is in the ear of the beholder.    :dunno:

My only experience I can use to contribute to the debate is when my son and I added a new sound system to his '74 Dart Sport and replaced his single 4"x10" with a pair of Volfenhag 3.5" two-way speakers.  Since the old speaker was deteriorated beyond use and we never had a chance to hear what  the original single paper cone sounded like, I have no basis for comparison.   What I can tell you is that the two modern two-way speakers sounded quite good to this over-50 old-time rocker and equally good to my teenage son.  Certainly what I would expect to be a big improvement over what could have been possible from the original speaker.

With that being said, I would like to point out this FOR SALE thread I have on this site offering the solution that many of you have been seeking to mount the two 3.5" speakers in your dash.  For those of you who do not have the tools or facilities to make your own, I sell an inexpensive laser-cut aluminum dual-speaker bracket that drops into the original speaker location.  If you are interested, please follow the link to place an order or contact me for more information.

Have you actually tested this in an E-body?  I made my own and found the right hand speaker had to be a little more to the center to clear, I'm imagine shallower speakers might not have that issue but in my case it did.

My apologies for not seeing this sooner and promptly replying.  Honestly, I have no experience with E-bodies, just the A-bodies I have helped my son with.
I have to rely on the feedback and information I receive from those folks who buy my brackets and install them in their cars.  To date, I have sold quite a
number of these to owners of E-bodies and late B-bodies that use the same style bracket.  I don't recall anyone over the past five or so years pointing out
any issues with conflicts under the dash.  That's not to say it wasn't a problem for some of them using particular speakers and they found a work-around.
It just hasn't been brought to my attention.  And, as you said, it could entirely be a matter of choosing the correct speaker with the appropriate size and shape.

If any of you members who bought my brackets did encounter problems during installation of your speakers, please let me know.  I'm always interested
in making necessary improvements to the design.  On the other hand, if you successfully used my bracket with no installation problems, please let us know
which speakers you used.
