Ignition Key Switch????
« on: April 07, 2012 - 04:58:21 PM »
Now when turning the ignition key, I get nothing.  Do have interior & exterior lights, but nothing from the starter upon turning the ignition key.  To get the 340 started, with trans in Park & Ignition Key turned to start, I can short the Starter Relay (big bolt on top of Relay to next connection down) and the motor will turn over and start right up.  So, I replaced the original Starter Relay, yet I still have the same problem.  Would the likely suspect be within the Igniton Key Switch or something else?  Thanks everyone.

On my car I'm missing the lockout linkage ( I think thats what it's called?) and if the arm on the firewall side is not in the correct position, it won't start just as you described. Failing that what about the netrual safety switch? and wiring?

Good Suggestions Brad.  I moved the lockout linkage (firewall side), nothing.  The Netrual Safety Switch "NSS" had been a problem in the recent past and to get the car started, I used a grounded wire on the Starter Relay to by-pass it (NSS) to get the car started, but I have since replaced that switch (on the transmission) and now when I try the same trick (by-passing the NSS), it doesn't do anything.  Wiring looks unimpacted, but I guess it could also be suspect.

Check your plug under the steering column where the column harness plugs into the dash harness.  I just had the problem where the car would only start when releasing the key to Run from Start.  A little fiddling with that plug and the wires and it started right up.  I had a similar problem to you last year where turning the key would do nothing.  Fiddling with the connector again squared it away.

I had similar problems with my old harness. The yellow wire from the starter relay had a bad connection to the firewall connector. Nothing happened when I turned the key. Had to open the hood and press the wire into the connector. Then it started. Later replaced all of the wiring with M&H harnesses. No problems after that.

Here's an update;  I put on a new starter relay, no change, no start.  Then I tested for current on the yellow wire with key on and yes, we got power.  Tested the other bottom wire and yes, power there too.  Then I tested the middle wire and of all things the starter motor wanted to turn over during the test!  And, to make it even more purplexing, the starter motor started turning with ignition off and no key in the ignition (had to disconnect the battery to get it to stop).  My buddy indicated he had seen this same problem many years ago and it turned out to be the starter motor. He is going to install his bench starter motor and see if that corrects the problem.
